I've been doing licensed day care in my home for over 6 years, still a "novice" to the "lifers" who've been at it more than 20 years, so I'm told. Every month we have "theme" months where it's an extra special day of fun. During one summer we had a "pajama party" theme. The kids came dressed in their favorite "jammies" complete with slippers, stuffed animal and favorite snuggle blankie. We had craft time, which went well. We had a sack race where the kids put both feet into a pillow case and hopped as far as they could before falling down. That was a hit! We made "travel pillows" covered with their favorite color pillow case they decorated with "cookie cutters" of animals/shapes/vehicles, etc. using "puffy paint." Those dried and turned out beautifully. Three years later and they're still being used... However, my next little bit of inspiration turned out quite differently. We had the "ELEFUN" game that shot butterflies up and out of the vertically extended elephant's trunk. My clever idea was to use feathers from a feather pillow instead, since "butterflies" just didn't go with our theme. We were in the garage so I thought the mess would be a controlled one. I thought wrong. The feathers whooshed up and out of that trunk and swirled around, delighting the children trying desperately to "bag" as many as they could using the handmade pillow cases. Then, whoosh, they were gone. It happened to be quite windy that day, so unfortunately they were "sucked" under the closed garage door. As you may have guessed, I hesitantly pushed the garage door opener and peered nervously out the garage door opening to see my great idea go "up in feathers" as several of our neighbors were at the lawn's edge watching a shower of feathers decorate 3 lawns labored over with love. Luckily the kids saved the day. They ran around in fits of laughter cleaning up that big feather mess, and soon the neighbors (me, too) joined in. The wind carried away what we didn't get to and my neighbors still laugh about it to this day.
